Alastair McDonald, Carl Leroy-Smith, Dr Mehdi KashaniThe first-year civil engineering design project, Prototype, introduces design as a rigorous iterative process and requires the application of a range of core design skills. Students work in small groups to design and manufacture a prototype structure for a given site on campus. The structures respond to an action word (Ascend, Descend, Traverse, Lookout), they should be simple to install and take down, they must not damage the site, and they should demonstrate an innovative response realised through a documented design process.
Final prototypes are presented to an invited audience of peers, academic staff, and industry representatives. Awards are given for the best overall design, the highest quality design drawings, and for team leadership.
