Welcome to DS10, our tenth annual Design Show exhibiting the design proposals produced by our undergraduate students in the School of Engineering. The Design Show was first held in 2015 and I would like to warmly thank my predecessor Alastair McDonald for his commitment to design education at Southampton over the last 10 years.

We challenge our students to be ambitious, to be creative and deliver innovation, to be independent and to lead by example. We expect them to be brave and take risks, to play, to explore and apply scientific knowledge and to be rigorous: to research – test – analyse. Throughout the process, we challenge our students to be relevant, to think sustainably, and to effectively communicate and engage with the environments and people around them.

We provide access to our specialist testing facilities, computational power and cutting-edge manufacturing processes and equipment. All supported by our world-class researchers, skilled technical and support staff and a network of industrialists who not only help develop and deliver our courses but generously support many of the projects you see here. The outcomes have the potential to make real and tangible difference to people’s lives and environments.

We have consistently high expectations and our students often exceed them. The results are diverse, ambitious, exciting and thought provoking, and this show celebrates their passion, talents and achievements.
