Professor Andrew Cruden, Dr Mehmet ErbilThe Southampton Formula Student Team designs and builds a single-seater racecar to compete at Formula Student events held throughout Europe during the summer.
Their 2019 car, STAG VI, is a natural evolution of its predecessor, retaining an aluminium honeycomb composite monocoque, Honda CBR600RR motorbike engine, carbon fibre suspension and a full aerodynamics package. An array of improvements has been made across the car, including: wireless telemetry, lighter steering, additively manufactured titanium inserts reducing wishbone mass by 25%, carbon fibre wings with a mass reduction of 20%, increased fuel efficiency using a lambda sensor and thinner aluminium facesheets for the monocoque, reducing mass by 10%.
The stature of the team has also grown tremendously this year; twenty-eight new sponsors have come onboard, including Santander Universities and Southampton Freight Services. Frequent social media posts have attracted significant attention, most notably a video of front wing aeroelasticity during a test in the RJ Mitchell wind tunnel which generated 41,000+ impressions.
