The Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) design, build and test is a second year activity where students, working in groups of five, employ their knowledge of systems design, aerodynamics, flight mechanics, structural design and computer programming to design and construct the wing and flight computer for a small, <1.2kg, aircraft. Each group is provided with an identical fuselage, tail and propulsion system to which their wing must attach. A series of flight tests held at the University of Southampton’s Wide Lane Sports Ground are then used to assess each team’s wing and flight computer for innovation, flight performance, autopilot control and build quality.
