Horn

Year 1
The design of a horn to emphasise a specific frequency range
Supervisors
Dr. Matthew Wright

Sound is one our principle senses and a crucial part of our environment. Acoustical Engineers have to combine their understanding of physical principles, human perception and technological possibilities so as to design a world that sounds better – whether it be clearer classrooms, quieter jet engines or superior stereo systems.

The power of horns to amplify sounds has been recognised throughout history. Our first year Acoustical Engineering students were challenged to design, build and test a series of horns, each emphasising a different frequency range giving each one a characteristic sound. They used numerical modelling software to predict the effects of the design, CAD modelling to define the shape, 3D printing to manufacture their design and a specialist acoustic test facility to measure the results.
