This traversing structure has been designed to span between two galvanised steel handrails. The flange of the beam aligns horizontally with the top face of the handrail, whilst the depth of the web is determined by the required minimum depth at the end where the handrail is highest, the structural requirements for spanning the site distance, and the depth required to level the beam where the handrail is lowest. The beam tapers in plan towards the end where the structural depth is least where it also cantilevers at one end to provide balance, reducing the bending action in the main span.
