The Fixed-Wing Uncrewed Air Vehicle (UAV) Project is a second-year activity where students, working in groups of six, employ their knowledge of aerodynamics, flight mechanics, systems design, structural design, and computer programming to design, build, and test a wing and gimbal for a small aircraft weighing less than 2.1kg.
Each team is provided with an identical fuselage, tail, and propulsion system to which their wing and gimbal must attach. A series of experiments including flight tests are then used to assess each team’s wing and gimbal for innovation, build quality, structural efficiency, flight performance, and stabilisation capabilities. The results of these tests are displayed as radar-plots next to the wing and gimbals.
