The project entails the concept design of a fast marine craft. The aims and objectives of the project are to provide an understanding of the fundamental steps in the concept design process and the functions and applications of design methodologies. The students work in groups; typically three or four students per group. They are offered a number of design scenarios and each group selects one on which they will base their concept design. The students develop a database containing information such as operational specifications, appropriate hull form choices, statutory regulations and environmental issues before moving on to their concept design. The design process takes into account aspects such as hydrostatics, powering, construction, seakeeping and sustainability.

The groups present their final concept design in a comprehensive report which must include details on resistance and propulsion. They also create a General Arrangement drawing, full lines plan and midship section. The project ends with the opportunity for the students to present their work to experts from industry and discuss their designs with them in a desk top review. The summary presentations from that review are included on these pages.
