This lookout structure balances across a stepped section of a masonry wall and forms a tapering spire. Four softwood timber battens run the length of the structure and are connected together by plywood panels. The panels act as diaphragms to internally brace the structure. These are offset along the length to help transmit torsional forces to the supports and form boxes to add rigidity, and to guide accurate fabrication and installation. The structure tapers and has open sections so that the centre of mass is low down, enhancing its overall stability and reducing the visual weight of the structure within its site context.
