The Fixed-Wing Uncrewed Air Vehicle (UAV) Systems is a second-year activity where students, working in groups of six, employ their knowledge of aerodynamics, flight mechanics, systems design, structural design, and computer programming to design, build, and test the wing and the payload stabilisation system (gimbal) for a small aircraft weighing less than 1.8 kg.
Each group is provided with an identical fuselage, tail, and propulsion system to which their wing must attach. A series of experiments including flight tests are then used to assess each team’s wing and gimbal for innovation, build quality, structural efficiency, flight performance, and stabilisation capabilities.
